14 YEARS STRONG

REMEMBERING RPM

RYAN PATMAN MEANS

As a child, Ryan always knew that he wanted to be a soldier. However, his career would lead him to the corporate world in New York City. On the morning of September 11, 2001, all of that changed. When two airliners crashed into the twin towers, it set in motion Ryan’s incredible journey from protecting his childhood neighborhood of Brookhaven to the neighborhoods of Iraq.

Ryan’s friends and family were shocked but not surprised when at the age of 31 he enlisted in the Army. Ryan did not take this decision to enlist lightly. Deep in Ryan’s heart was a love for his country and a great historical perspective of the sacrifices that young men and women have made to defend America’s peace and security.

In May 2009, during a deployment in Iraq, Ryan noticed that he was jaundiced and was airlifted to Baghdad for further testing. Ryan was diagnosed with Cholagiocarcinoma and immediately medivaced to Walter Read Army Hospital in Washington DC for initial treatment, and later to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City for surgery.

On the morning of July 7th, the sun rose in New York City as Ryan passed on to heaven. His wife Heather and his parents Mary Jo and Al held him closely. We will remember Ryan as a sweet son, a loving husband, a doting father, a wild-man brother, an unwavering friend, and a fearless soldier. But most of all, we will remember Ryan as our hero.

Ryan ended all of his letters with a simple thought: “Keep on rockin’ in the free world.”

Our ability to do this during a time when Shepherd will soon launch its largest expansion to date will be a wonderful catalyst to show our love, respect and support for an institution that continues to offer hope with no boundaries or limits.

Meet Our 2025 Speaker:

Gabriel “Buddy” Gengler

Decorated Army Veteran. Business Leader. American Hero.

We are honored to welcome Gabriel “Buddy” Gengler as the featured speaker for the 2025 RPM 9-11 5K. Buddy’s life is a powerful testament to courage, leadership, and perseverance—from the battlefield to the boardroom.

A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Buddy was a standout student-athlete, serving as Captain of the Army baseball team and helping lead them to an NCAA tournament appearance. Upon graduating in 2001, he was commissioned as a Field Artillery officer and deployed to Iraq in 2003 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As a Quick Reaction Force Platoon Leader, Buddy led combat missions in some of Iraq’s most volatile regions. His leadership and commitment to his soldiers were unwavering—he brought every member of his platoon home safely. For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star. After being injured in combat, Buddy was medically separated from the Army in 2005.

But his story didn’t end there.

Buddy went on to earn an MBA and launch a successful business career, including time at Ernst & Young and as a portfolio manager. In 2016, he founded MAVEC Group, a company providing construction and staffing services for federal and state infrastructure projects. Today, MAVEC employs over 125 people and continues to grow under Buddy’s leadership.

Through every chapter of his life—from soldier to CEO—Buddy has stayed grounded in service. He’s a proud husband and father to four daughters, an artisan who crafts handmade American flags to support veterans’ charities, and a relentless advocate for those who serve.

Buddy’s journey is one of grit, grace, and deep patriotism. We’re proud to share his story with you at this year’s RPM 9-11 5K.
